Hal Braff has been a practicing trial attorney in New Jersey since 1960 and in New York since 1983. In 1982 he was Certified as a Civil Trial Attorney by the Supreme Court of New Jersey and in 1997 Certified as a Mediator by The Institute for Dispute Resolution. He is rated A-V by Martindale-Hubbell.

Hal has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of San Diego Summer Sessions (1977, 1979, 1981, 1984) teaching Trial Presentation and at Rutgers University Law School, Newark Campus, since1990, teaching Trial Presentation and Negotiation Skills. From 2001-2007, he taught Negotiation Skills at Beijing University in its International MBA Program.

From the onset of his career, as an attorney, he was a partner in the law firm which bore his name, known today as Braff Harris and Sukoneck, with offices in Livingston, New Jersey and New York City. While there he served as Chair of the Litigation Group of the Defense Research Institute and a Member of the Product Liability Council. Hal has, throughout his career, had extensive trial experience in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York in areas as varied as plaintiff and defendant personal injury, asbestos defense, environmental, employment, product liability, insurance policy interpretation, errors and admissions policy issues, legal , medical engineering and accounting malpractice claims , construction claims and construction contracts.

A past member of the New Jersey Supreme Court’s District Ethics Committee, he served for five years as a member of the IOLTA Fund Board, the last as Chairman.

One of the originators of the American Inns of Court in the State of New Jersey, Hal was elected to the Board of Trustees of the National Inns of Court Foundation in 1991 and in 1994 was honored in the United States Supreme Court with the A. Sherman Christensen Award for excellence in service to the legal community. He was elected National Vice President in 2000. For his work in furthering the standards of excellence in the practice of law, Hal has been recognized with a Special Merit Award by the Essex County Bar Association and the New Jersey Trial Lawyers Association.

In 2003 Hal became Of Counsel to the firm of Margulies Wind with offices in Jersey City, New Jersey. He serves as mediator, arbitrator, special discovery master and counsel to select clients.

Since 2008 he has been included in New York Magazines list of the New York Areas Top Lawyers. In 2009, Hal was elected to the Newark, New Jersey Athletic Hall Of Fame.

For Hal, the achievement for which he is most proud is his part in the development of the Weequahic High School Alumni Association, the goal of which was to join together the graduates from the decades since the school opened in 1933, Jew and Gentile, blacks and whites  to raise funds and provide opportunities to assist current graduates to obtain the education essential to fulfill the American dream.

Hal resides in South Orange, New Jersey with his wonderful wife Elaine. They have six children and nine grandchildren.

Maurice C. Brigadier, who taught the principal bar review course in New Jersey through 1979, established the firm in 1923 in Jersey City, N.J. Still located there, the firm is in the heart of Exchange Place, overlooking the Hudson River and New York Harbor.
